In 1961 the Cuban government had imposed broad restrictions on travel to prevent the mass emigration of people after the 1959 revolution; it approved exit visas only on rare occasions. The country faced a severe economic downturn following the withdrawal of Soviet subsidies worth $4 billion to $6 billion annually, resulting in effects such as food and fuel shortages. In the 1950s, various organizations, including some advocating armed uprising, competed for public support in bringing about political change. On balance, during the period 1933–1940, Cuba suffered from fragile political structures, with three presidents in two years (1935–1936) and in the militaristic and repressive policies of Batista as head of the army. The period from 1933 to 1937 was a time of “virtually unremitting social and political warfare”. In 1908, self-government was restored when José Miguel Gómez was elected president, but the U.S. continued intervening in Cuban affairs.

Cuban historians have characterized Magoon’s governorship as introducing political and social corruption. American and European protests against Spanish conduct on the island followed. General Valeriano Weyler, the military governor of Cuba, herded the rural population into what he called reconcentrados, described by international observers as “fortified towns”. The United States declined to recognize the new Cuban government, although many European and Latin American nations did.

Sand and clay plains cover parts of the north, a gravel bed takes up most of the southern part of the island, and bogs dominate the coasts and sparsely inhabited interior. Hills, dotted with groves of pine and palm, characterize much of the island’s northwest and southeast. Among the extensive cays and archipelagoes ringing the main island are Los Colorados, to the northwest; Sabana and Camagüey, both off the north-central coast; the Jardines https://www.betybets.nl/ de la Reina (“Queen’s Gardens”), near the south-central coast; and Canarreos, near the southwest coast. The main island is surrounded by a submerged platform covering an additional 30,000 square miles (78,000 square km). The plains covering about two-thirds of the main island have been used extensively for sugarcane and tobacco cultivation and livestock raising.
The main island, named Cuba, is 1,250 km (780 mi) long, constituting most of the nation’s land area (104,338 km2 or 40,285 sq mi) and is the largest island in the Caribbean and 17th-largest island in the world. President Donald Trump added Cuba to the State Sponsors of Terrorism list, implementing a series of additional economic sanctions on the country. Raúl Castro remained the First Secretary of the Communist Party and retained broad authority, including oversight over the president.
For example, ChatGPT says it can’t “engage in real-time conversations involving emotions”, however while it has no real empathy, it will respond if you talk about your emotions. Free tier users only get 15 minutes of ChatGPT Voice a month. Just tell it the ingredients you have and the number of people you need to serve, and it’ll rustle up some impressive ideas. But in its early days, users have discovered several particularly useful ways to use the AI helper. OpenAI says that its responses “may be inaccurate, untruthful, and otherwise misleading at times”. But early users have also revealed some of ChatGPT’s limitations.
Power outages
In 1958 Cuba was a well-advanced country compared to other Latin American regions, but it was affected by perhaps Latin America’s largest labor union privileges, including bans on dismissals and mechanization. Back in power and receiving financial, military, and logistical support from the United States government, Batista suspended the 1940 constitution and revoked most political liberties, including the right to strike. This ability to produce human-like, and frequently accurate, responses to a vast range of questions is why ChatGPT became the fastest-growing app of all time, reaching 100 million users in only two months.
The Green Mile
It does sometimes go a little bit crazy, and OpenAI has been honest about the ‘hallucinations’ that ChatGPT can have, and the problems inherent in these LLMs. Once you give ChatGPT a question or prompt, it passes through the AI model and the chatbot produces a response based on the information you’ve given and how that fits into its vast amount of training data. Finally, Plus users get access to Sora for AI video generation. ChatGPT Plus users get access to ChatGPT Voice as well as ChatGPT search and the new Study mode. Sora AI video generation is also available to Plus users.

- Cuba ranks as the fifth-largest producer of refined cobalt in the world.
- Cuba also tried to get tourists to visit the island.
- Stanford researchers reported that GPT-4 “passes a rigorous Turing test, diverging from average human behavior chiefly to be more cooperative.”
- The government’s relaxation of restrictions on house churches in the 1990s led to an explosion of Pentecostalism, with some groups claiming as many as 100,000 members.
- American and European protests against Spanish conduct on the island followed.
The Cauto lowland adjoins a series of coastal plains that continue across the island from east to west, including the Southern Plain, Júcaro-Morón Plain, Zapata Peninsula (Zapata Swamp), Southern Karst and Colón Plain, and Southern Alluvial Plain. The island of Cuba itself is by far the largest in the chain and constitutes one of the four islands of the Greater Antilles. The country comprises an archipelago of about 1,600 islands, islets, and cays with a combined area three-fourths as large as the U.S. state of Florida. In 2015, Cuba became the first country to eradicate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis, a milestone hailed by the World Health Organization as “one of the greatest public health achievements possible”.
Revolutionary government (1959–present)
Cuba spent this money on health, education and the army. Cuba became a communist-led country like the Soviet Union after this. At the time, Cuba was a monoculture economy. Even though Cuba was independent, the Americans still controlled the island by a law called the Platt Amendment. Three years later, he claimed the islands for the Spanish. The Taínos were the largest and most common of the three tribes.
- Salaries in Cuba are the lowest in the world, but some things are free that people in other countries have to pay for.

- OpenAI’s, ChatGPT-5 model can work across any combination of text, audio and images meaning many more applications for AI are now possible.
- Many people especially enjoy reading books or things that come from outside the country, even though the government does not approve of this.
- In 1956, Castro and about 80 supporters landed from the yacht Granma in an attempt to start a rebellion against the Batista government.
Cuba has historically—before and during communist rule—performed better than other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean on several socioeconomic indicators, such as literacy, infant mortality, and life expectancy. Raúl retired as president of the Council of State in 2018, and Miguel Díaz-Canel was elected president by the National Assembly following parliamentary elections. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Cuba faced a severe economic downturn in the 1990s, known as the Special Period. During the 1970s through the late 1980s, Cuba intervened in numerous conflicts in support of anti-colonial and Marxist governments or movements across Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. The country under Castro was a point of contention during the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States, and the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 is widely considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into nuclear war.
In November 2023, OpenAI released GPT Builder a tool for users to customize ChatGPT’s behavior for a specific use case. However, no machine translation services match human expert performance. In December 2023, the Albanian government decided to use ChatGPT for the rapid translation of European Union documents and the analysis of required changes needed for Albania’s accession to the EU. According to the company, Plus provided access during peak periods, no downtime, priority access to new features, and faster response speeds. In December 2024, OpenAI launched a new feature allowing users to call ChatGPT with a telephone for up to 15 minutes per month for free. GPT-based moderation classifiers are used to reduce the risk of harmful outputs being presented to users.
The islands form an important segment of the Antilles (West Indies) island chain, which continues east and then south in a great arc enclosing the Caribbean Sea. Cuba’s other cities—including Santiago, Camagüey, Holguín, and, especially, Trinidad—offer a rich legacy of colonial Spanish architecture to complement contemporary buildings. However, the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s isolated Cuba still further, bringing on what Cubans euphemistically call the período especial (“special period”), a time of widespread shortages and financial uncertainty.
That means the government decides what things should be made and what services should be provided. Cobalt, nickel, iron, copper, and manganese are all on the island. A hand-made cigar is considered by many people to be the finest in the world. Sugar cane is the largest cash crop grown in Cuba, and it brings in most of the money. In 2006, the World Food Programme certified Cuba to be the only country in this region without undernourished children. In some aspects however, like education, health care and life expectancy it ranks much better than most countries in Latin America.
